Detect changes and discontinuities in vital parts and components
What is laser scanning?
Laser scanning is a nondestructive testing method that utilizes laser beams to detect changes to the surface of a given material. Three of the most widely used laser scanning techniques are:
Holographic testing - Holographic testing evaluates the reaction of a component to induced stress, such as heat, pressure or vibration. A laser beam scans the surface of the component under stress, and the results are compared with a reference sample in order to identify resulting cracks and other defects.
Laser profilometry - Laser profilometry creates a high resolution, three-dimensional image of the surface of a part or component using a high-speed rotating light source, optical devices and digital signal processing software. This technique is useful for cracks, pitting and corrosion in tubes and pipes.
- Laser shearography - Laser shearography uses laser light to create an image of a non-stressed part or component. This image is then compared with subsequent images of the same part or component under stress. This technique is useful for identifying surface discontinuities as small as a few micrometers in size.
What are the advantages of laser scanning?
Laser scanning generally provides high resolution images and faster image digitizing than other nondestructive testing techniques. Laser scanning can be particularly useful in creating “as-built” images of equipment installations can be compared with subsequent image scans.
