What is ultrasonic testing?
Ultrasonic testing (UT) and inspection is a non-destructive testing methodology used primarily for the evaluation of the mechanical and structural properties of materials, especially for the detection of material thicknesses and flaws. UT begins by introducing high frequency sound waves into a material under test. The intensity of the sound waves is measured, either on the opposite side of the material under test or at a point of reflection. The level of intensity can then be correlated with established results for sample materials of the same composition, which allows an inspector to determine the presence and location of any flaws.
What are the advantages of ultrasonic testing?
UT is superior to conventional radiography in detected flaws located deep within materials under test. Further, the extreme sensitivity of UT test waves allows small flaws to be precisely located and sized. UT is also a flexible testing method that requires access to only one surface of the material under test for evaluation purposes. Finally, UT produces a rapid response from materials under test, allowing for fast and efficient inspection of large or expansive piping installations.
